About the Work

Three Cloud Dances is a piece for solo flute, doubling C Flute and Alto Flute. The piece begins with a mysterious, Sicilian-style dance with frequent ‘sliding’ around chromatic harmonies. The second movement presents a gleeful chase, culminating in a virtuosic display of two melodies playing catch-up with each other. The final movement utilises numerous ornaments reminiscent of late Baroque flute writing, all to capture a somewhat cheeky sense of contentment.

Performance Note

Whilst this work is written for a performer doubling on an Alto Flute, I have provided an alternative version of the opening movement for C Flute, allowing the work to be performed only on a Concert Flute.

Finding places to breathe may be due to the relentless feel of the music. Breath marks are given to show ends of phrases where it may not be fully clear and slight pauses may be taken in these places to ensure enough breath is taken in. Beyond this, breathes may be taken freely at the discretion of the performer. Tenuto markings are used to show important notes in a phrase during contrapuntal writing, in comparison to the written ‘ten.’ which indicates emphasis and slight elongation of the duration of the note. The use of bisbigliando in the first movement should be executed with the first note of the bar using the ‘ordinary’ fingering, with each subsequent quaver utilising a different fingering to the one before/after it to give changes in colour and wavering pitch at the discretion of the performer. Bracketed notes provide an alternative for performers who do not have access to a B foot.
