About the Work

Princess Ida is one of the fourteen Gilbert & Sullivan light operas, made famous through its performances at the Savoy Theatre in the late 19th century. The operetta tells the story of a princess who runs a women’s university, teaching of the superiority of women, who was betrothed as a child to a prince. The prince breaks into the university with two of his friends to find the princess and convince her to marry him.

This concert arrangement takes some of the best-known segments of Princess Ida and condenses them into a single concert piece, whilst preserving the general plot. Written for a small orchestra, the piece is suitable for performance by a choir and soloists, or a confident choir with frequent solo opportunities.

Performance Notes

This concert arrangement is written for a theatre orchestra, and alternative parts are included to facilitate easy performance if some instruments are missing. A string reduction keyboard part, with optional registration changes,  is included through the piano-vocal score. With the string reduction, this arrangement can be performed with only one player per string part, although having multiple string players per part is advised.

This arrangement presumes performance by a choir and a roster of soloists, or as a semi-staged performance by an operetta cast, however it is possible to perform this work with a choir in a ‘standard’ performance setting. In the latter case, some suggested adaptations are listed to better suit a choir and a smaller group of soloists.

Florian’s entrance at figure [E] can be sung by the tenor section, before rejoining the rest of the choir at [F]. ‘Gently Gently’ can be treated as a tenor solo singing all individual lines, and the choir tenors and basses singing the responses, moments where all three characters sing together (such as at [K] or [U]) should be sung by tutti tenors and basses together.

Melissa’s solo lines can be sung by the soprano section, particularly for ‘Death to the Invader’. Hilarion’s solo in ‘Whom Thou Hast Chained’ must remain a solo, however, Cyril and Florian’s responses may be sung by the tenor and bass sections, respectively. All Princess Ida’s solo passages should remain a soprano solo.

Hildebrand’s solo lines may be sung by tutti tenors, it would be preferable for it to be performed by a soloist, particularly at [V1]. ‘We May Remark’ may be performed by tutti basses throughout.
