About the Work

I wrote Planetary Sketches when I was the student conductor of the Royal Holloway Brass Band for the 2022 UniBrass competition at Sheffield University.

The opening chorale presents the majesty of the planets, before a lop-sided, march-like section represents the whimsy of planetary orbit. This is followed by more music of a more melancholy character, before shifting again to a majestic texture with a bright countermelody in the Soprano Cornet and Euphoniums. The music is brought to a close with a return to the march-like theme, now in a straight triple-time, before a brash and bombastic finale.

World Premiere

Premiered by the composer and the Royal Holloway Brass Band at the Drama Studio, University of Sheffield on 5 February, 2022.
