About the Work
I initially wrote Moonless Sky as an exercise in writing a theme and variations. The result is a shimmering and challenging work full of song-like melodies and rapid scalic runs.

Performance Note
This work makes frequent use of contrast between passages with agile runs and more lyrical moments. Particular care should be taken for the second variation (b. 30), to ensure the counter melody marked with accented grace notes are properly voiced. They should not be played so quickly so as not to be independently heard, but it should almost sound as if there are two flutes playing together.
The fourth variation should be played very smoothly and glasslike, even during grace notes and ornaments. The fourth variation should immediately transition into the cadenza without breath, if possible. The cadenza should have a Paganini-like feel in terms of its intensity and flourish.
