About the Work

I wrote Ciclo di Vita (Life Cycle) as an attempt to capture a representation of life, from the sounds of a person’s very first breath, through to their last breath. The middle movements largely focus on the playful joy of childhood and living through adulthood, before the fourth movement takes a darker turn towards death

The final movement represents the letting go of life and arrival, through Purgatory, into Elysium. From tumultuous high tremolo to swelling chords, the work then concludes with a childlike, glistening descending chord, representing the completion of life's circle.

Performance Note

This piece is written for a button accordion, and as such, there are several moments of extended range written for the right hand. If this work is performed with a keyboard accordion, this may prove a challenge as the hand-span in the last three movements regularly exceeds an octave, with the last movement in particular reaching nearly two octaves in the right hand. I encourage performers to rework passages which pose a challenge to make them more playable on their specific instrument.

The use of a loop pedal is only required for the fourth movement, and is only utilised to maintain an inverted pedal from the opening bar until the penultimate bar. Should the use of a loop pedal prove a challenge for the performer, it can easily be substituted by pre-recording the inverted pedal point from bar 1 until bar 51. In this case, it is not advisable to play the opening bar live, but instead begin the track and begin playing from bar 3.
